Last week, I presented five of the greatest front men in Rock & Roll history. This week...the spotlight is squarely on the ladies. The only criteria (same as with the men) was that these women were the lead vocalists in bands...not just solo artists who were backed by bands. We start the week with the legendary Janis Joplin of Big Brother and the Holding Company. The pride of Port Arthur, Texas...Joplin exuded an amazing combination of rock, blues, and soul that made her unlike any female performer of her time. She had a voice, attitude, and swagger that electrified any audience and made the world stand up and take notice. Tragically passing away from a heroin overdose in 1970 at the age of 27...it’s a shame that we never got the chance to see her reach her true potential. This is part of her set...performed in the wee hours of the morning...during the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival.
