More than 1.6K uncounted New Jersey primary ballots found in 'mislabeled’ bin

More than 1,600 ballots from a New Jersey primary election were found last week in a “mislabeled” bin, an election official said.

According to a statement from Sussex County Board of Elections Administrator Marge McCabe, the 1,666 ballots cast in the July 7 primary were discovered Thursday, the New Jersey Herald reported.

After the state attorney’s general office was notified, the remaining ballots were counted and certified by the Sussex County Clerk’s office the same day, the newspaper reported.

It was unclear how many of the misplaced ballots belonged to each race in the county, the Herald reported. In a statement, the board of elections said the newly counted votes “did not change the outcome of any Sussex County primary election in any race for any office, Republican or Democrat.”

“The board of elections is confident that all ballots received have been processed, and the security of all the ballots has remained in place,” the statement read.

A majority of Sussex County residents voted by mail because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Herald reported. The county election board temporarily moved to Sussex County Community College to count the votes while practicing proper social distancing.

The newspaper reported that the county received 28,062 mail-in ballots and an additional 2,126 provisional ballots for this year’s primary.
