LOS ANGELES — A rapid increase in coronavirus cases has lead Los Angeles County officials to close all beaches for the Fourth of July weekend. 

The order, approved Monday, closes all beaches, piers, bike paths and public entryways starting Friday and ending Sunday, KCAL reported. 

Violators could be subject to a $1,000 fine, authorities said. 

“Due to rising COVID-19 cases, all (Los Angeles County) beaches will be closing again temporarily this weekend, July 3rd through 6th,” Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn wrote on social media. “We had almost 3,000 reported cases (Monday). We cannot risk having crowds at the beach this holiday weekend.”

Beaches were initially reopened June 11 after being closed for weeks to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. Health officials said there were 2,903 confirmed cases and 22 deaths from the coronavirus on Monday in Los Angeles County. There have been 100,772 cases and 3,326 deaths in the county, KCAL reported.

Fireworks displays over the weekend were also banned.
