John Lennon's New York memorial | Today in Rock October 9

October 9th, 2009 Bruce Springsteen plays the final show at Giants Stadium. Part of his set, an early version of his song “Wrecking Ball”, which he wrote specifically for this occasion.

Today in 1985 on what would have been John Lennon’s 45th birthday, a section of Central Park in New York is dedicated as Strawberry Fields. It includes a mosaic on the ground with the word imagine. And it has become a touchstone for many tourists visiting the New York area, especially because it’s in walking distance of John’s home at The Dakota.

Then we take a look at the calendar and find a few rock birthdays on it. Born today in 1961, Guitarist, singer-songwriter from BoDeans, Kurt Neumann. Born today in 1948, Jackson Browne. Born today in 1944. The Quiet One, The Ox, John Entwistle, bassist from The Who. And born today in 1940, the one and only John Lennon.
