September 7th, 2003, it’s a sad day as we lose Warren Zevon to cancer. Now when he first got a diagnosis, Warren decided that he wasn’t going to do anything to fight his cancer because he felt it would incapacitate him. He also went on The David Letterman Show. He said that David was the best friend his music ever had. And while he was on the show, David asked him if he had learned anything since being diagnosed. And he said, “Enjoy every sandwich.” A quote that has been used time and time again when referring to Warren. After this, he decides to go in the studio and he records his final album, “The Wind.” And while they’re recording it, they also film a documentary that comes out. It’s called “Keep Me in Your Heart.” And it’s just absolutely heartbreaking to see a man who’s recording an album when he truly knows it will be his last one, especially when he covers Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”
Today in 1978, we also lost Keith Moon of The Who. He actually overdosed on the medication that was given to him to try and curb his alcoholism.
Then we look at today’s calendar, we find a few rock birthdays on it. Keyboardist from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the band Mudcrutch, Benmont Tench, who actually was the son of a judge who Tom Petty had to go to the judge and plead for him to let Benmont leave school and become part of the band. Also, Chrissie Hynde, who was born in Ohio and somehow still went on to lead a band of Englishmen. And then Buddy Holly, who, although he only lived 22 years, influenced countless artists to follow, including The Beatles and even Don McClain, who wrote his classic, “American Pie”, about him.
