August 13th, 2024. Sadly, we lose Greg Kihn. Now Greg’s a fantastic rocker with an amazing sense of humor, a great feel for power pop, and also a fantastic radio host, and he is sorely missed.
Today in 1989, Scorpions float down the Moskva River past Gorky Park on their way to play the Moscow Music and Peace Festival. This event inspires their song “Wind of Change”, which also becomes the title of their biopic.
On this date in 1975, Bruce Springsteen plays the first of five sold out dates at New York City’s Bottom Line. This is a legendary venue that sadly closed its doors in 2004. These 5 sold out dates that Bruce does cements his reputation as an amazing live performer.
Today in 1973, Lynyrd Skynyrd released their debut album, “Pronounced ‘Lĕh-’nérd ‘Skin-’nérd”, which includes their signature hit, “Free Bird.”
On this date in 1938, Robert Johnson dies. He’s a Blues icon whose music has been covered by the likes of The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. Now, the way the story goes is that he was poisoned. The venue owner where he played in Greenwood, Mississippi put the poison in the bottle of whiskey he gave to Robert because Robert was having an affair with his wife. Robert Johnson passes away at 27 years old, arguably the first member of the 27 Club.
Then as we take a look at the calendar today, born today in 1952, founding member of the Outlaws and one-time guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd as well, Hughie Thomasson, who sadly we lost in 2007.
