September 21st, 2011. REM call it quits. They’re not the first band to break up. Sure, they’re not going to be the last one, but some bands reunite. It’s just something I don’t foresee happening for REM.
Today in 2004, Green Day released their album “American Idiot.” It goes on to become a huge success for the band. It wins them the best rock album Grammy and it also spawns A Broadway musical and a documentary.
Today in 2001, “A Tribute To Heroes Telethon.” It’s done to raise money for the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. It raises over $128 million. Some of the performers, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, and Willie Nelson.
Today in 1993, Nirvana released their single, “All Apologies”, backed with “Rape Me.” It is the final single that is released while Kurt Cobain is still alive.
Today in 1979, Bruce Springsteen debuts his song “The River.” He does it at the No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden. Now, Bruce’s fans are waiting for him to come to the stage and they have a very specific way of calling his name, Bruce, which if you didn’t know what it was, you might think you were being booed, which is exactly what Bonnie Raitt thought as she was on before Bruce.
Today in 1968, Jimi Hendrix releases his version of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower”, and the version that some people think is the quintessential version.
And then we take a look at the calendar. We find a couple rock birthdays on it. Born today in 1971, singer and co-founder of Oasis, Liam Gallagher, and born today in 1947, former Eagle and solo artist Don Felder.
