It took a long time for Def Leppard to release their first stand alone live album, Mirror Ball: Live & More in 2011. The band formed in 1976, so they really waited a LONG time to do it.
The album was announced February 22, 2011, but in January, Phil Collen said in a interview that the band had already been working on new songs, and were recording them, with a new album coming in May.
The songs for the live album were recorded between 2008 and 2009, all around the world, and the set included three new songs, one written by Joe Elliott, “Undefeated”, one from Phil Collen, “It’s All About Believin’”, and one from Rick Savage, “Kings of the World”. These three songs were added at the end of the album, with a Japanese bonus track consisting of an acoustic version of “Kings of the World”.
An early review described the album as “far better than most fans will expect it to be”...but knowing several die-hard Def Leppard fans, they knew it was going to be good.
While Joe’s voice has come down from the high screams of his youth, I really like where his voice has gone when he’s singing well...he’s got more beef to his sound, and sounds really good. Of course, Phil and Vivian are monsters on guitar, and Rick Allen continues to hold it down behind the kit. It’s impressive how good the band sounds this far into their career.
