Joe hospitalized while wife saves Spurs playoff hopes

Playoff Shirt

So...kind of a lot has happened since game two of the playoffs.

Following the injury to Wemby and the Spurs loss in game two...I was feeling pretty skeptical about the power of my lucky playoff shirt. But I still had hope...and had every intention of busting it out again for game three.

That’s when fate stepped in.

About a half hour before my afternoon show on Thursday...I started experiencing classic heart attack symptoms at the radio station. No joke. So I had fellow Eagle on-air personality Johnnie Walker drive me to Methodist Hospital just down the street from the station. Long story short...after a number of tests in the ER...they determined that one of my arteries was 100% blocked and another was 70% blocked...so they admitted me and scheduled me for 6:45 am heart surgery the next day. My surgical team was AMAZING...and the proceedure was a complete success. I ended up spending the next two days in the hospital under observation...and was released late Saturday. About as good as it could get...right?

But...what about game three???

After sixteen hours at my hospital bedside...my rockstar of a wife went home to try and get a few hours of sleep. She flopped down on the sofa...completely exhausted...and flipped on the late-starting Spurs game...only to realize that it was well into the third quarter and they were down by 15. “Holy crap!” she realized. “Joe’s lucky playoff shirt is hanging in the closet...doing absolutely no good!” So like the true monster sports fan that she is who CLEARLY understands the validity of playoff routines and superstitions...she ran and grabbed the shirt & put it on.

And that’s when the magic happened.

The Spurs mounted an incredible comeback and ended up winning the game 120-108.

So I just had to share this selfie she took at the end of the game...following literally one of the most difficult days of her life.

This is why we love sports. As silly as it may sound to some...it allows us to escape...if only for a short time...from the daily BS that we all deal with.

So you can thank my incredible girlfriend / best friend / wife / partner / and insane sports fanatic of thirty-four years & counting for her fast thinking and for restoring the mojo to the lucky playoff shirt...which will once again be worn proudly by me for game four and beyond.

GO SPURS GO!!!
