In a statement obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle, airport officials said officers responded around 7:30 a.m. PST to a report of an armed man at SFO’s international terminal. The newspaper reported that police fired beanbag projectiles to try to de-escalate the situation and fired shots at the man when he “continued to advance.”

The man, who was not immediately identified, died of his injuries, according to KNTV.

Officials said a man in the area experiencing homelessness suffered a minor injury in the shooting, the Chronicle and KGO-TV reported. Airport spokesperson Doug Yakel told the Chronicle that the man was treated and released from a hospital.

It was not immediately clear what spurred Thursday’s incident, which briefly closed the Bay Area Rapid Transit station at the airport.

Authorities continue to investigate.
